School Capacity Building Project
The Hamoodur Rahman Foundation has a keen interest in supporting community-based schools as they cater to the educational needs of their students. In this effort, we have responded to a proposal put forward by our team leader in Quetta for assistance of the Killi Abdul Wahid school on the city’s Kurd Sibi Road. The school takes its name from the village where it is located, which is home to 10,000 people largely employed in manual labour with an average income of PKR 15,000.
The community-run school is constructed on land gifted by the community and caters to 60 primary-year students in an area with a total of 150 children within the same age-range. It is run by Ms. Shazia, the sole teacher and staff member of this school who has faced external threats as a result of her public role. Despite this opposition, she stands steadfast in her social service, determined to contribute to the educational betterment of her community.
When the Hamoodur Rahman Foundation was first notified of this school, it had sparse infrastructure and depleting physical boundaries which failed to meet its student’s educational and social needs. HRF took the initiative of improving Killi Abdul Wahid School’s infrastructural capacity in partnership with the Balochistan Development Organization, and has since provided funds and material to facilitate this. As of January 2022, HRF has constructed 4 new classrooms and 2 toilet blocks on the school premises, ensuring that the student’s educational and hygiene needs are met. We are currently raising funds for the project’s next phase, which will include chipped flooring for the constructed area and a boundary wall around the school.
With this flagship capacity building project near completion, HRF is on the lookout for other community-run schools that may be in need of similar assistance. We welcome project proposals from across the country, which can be shared with us through our Collaborate page.
